Insight into your baby's health
Prenatal screening is a collective term for the NIPT, the 13-week ultrasound, and the 20-week ultrasound. These tests are offered during your pregnancy. They are not mandatory, but are available to every pregnant woman in the Netherlands. During one of your first appointments, we will provide detailed counselling about these options. We’re here to discuss all options calmly, so you can confidently decide what feels best for you and your partner.
NIPT
The NIPT is a safe blood test that screens for chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome. A blood sample, which poses no risk to you or your baby, is taken and the analysis is conducted in a laboratory to detect any chromosomal abnormalities. Want to have more information about the NIPT? We will tell you more details about this during a consultation and we’ll arrange everything for you if you wish. You can also find more information at www.pns.nl.

The 13-week and 20-week ultrasounds are examinations where we take a detailed look at your baby. During both ultrasounds, your baby is carefully examined for any structural or congenital anomalies, and we also monitor growth. In the 20-week ultrasound, we additionally assess the position of the placenta. Keep in mind: not everything is always visible on an ultrasound, but these tests provide valuable information about your baby’s health. Currently, the 13-week ultrasound is only offered in a research setting in the Netherlands, meaning you need to sign a consent form for scientific research. Would you like to have these ultrasounds or want to have more information? During a consultation we will counsel you about those two ultrasounds and, if you want to, we will schedule them for you.
